Das Jahr 2007 war für unsere Gadgets eine Zeitenwende. Mit dem Erscheinen des allerersten „Smartphones“, dem iPhone von Apple, wurden elektronische Helferlein plötzlich in zwei unterschiedliche Zweige getrennt. Wahrscheinlich für immer.

Hier das iPhone, ein reines Gerät des Konsums. Keinerlei Eingabe- oder Ausgabeoptionen mehr außer einem Bildschirm, „alles ist Touch“.

Dort Geräte wie der Computer, Eingabe und Ausgabe strikt getrennt, die nach wie vor bestehenden „Creator Devices“. Wir Menschen klappern Zeug in diese Maschine, wahlweise mit Tastatur oder Maus, sehr selten sogar gleichzeitig, die Ausgabe erfolgt strikt auf einem externen Gerät namens Monitor. Keine Smartphone-App wird ohne PC erstellt.

Seitdem ist viel passiert. Leider auch viel zu viel Scheiße.

Die elektronische Welt, wie wir sie heute vorfinden, ist eine Welt der UIs, der User Interfaces, zu deutsch stocksteif genannt Benutzerschnittstellen. Die meisten Benutzerschnittstellen sind knallbunt, man könnte es so zusammenfassen: „alles was man klicken, draggen, und droppen kann.“

Auch hier gab es von Anfang an zwei Paradigmen: hier die US-Firma Apple, die lieber zu wenig als zu viel in ihre UIs einbaut, weil sie keine NutzerInnen überfordern möchte. Dort die US-Firma Google mit Benutzerschnittstellen für jeden Furz, bis zum Verändern einer simplen Systemkachel, für Techies, Überforderung völlig egal. Nichts dazwischen, eigentlich von Anfang an. Der Touchscreen schreibt die Regeln jetzt vor.

Was dann am Ende, natürlich, zu noch mehr NutzerInnenverblödung führte, wie hier von dem Reddit-Nutzer ClockworkAeroplane vor kurzem beschrieben:

„I teach mostly college freshmen. They don’t know what a URL even is. Literally. I tell them the easily-remembered URL for the Moodle server, and they literally don’t know what to do with it. They have never typed a URL into an address bar in their lives. Why? You don’t do that on an iPhone.

They know how to search for things. They know how to tap/click a link. They do not know what a URL is.

I found out that a lot of them were logging into the school’s bulletin board system, finding my welcome message from the beginning of the year, and then tapping/clicking the Moodle URL and the Zoom URL there. The problem with the latter is that the Zoom URL there was the registration one, which many of them couldn’t figure out, so they asked their friends for „the“ Zoom meeting URL, and one guy posted „it“ to their social media group, and tons of people entered with that.

Yeah, that was his Zoom URL. Not the Zoom URL. I had like 10 people coming in as the same person, making the usage record completely unusable.

Just…

Kids who grew up on smartphones literally do not know how to do anything on a computer. Literally. I had to make a screencast showing them how to type in a URL, how to figure out what application a PDF is opening in, where downloads go when you download things… Just really basic computer stuff that they simply don’t know.

They don’t know what a menu is. I say, „Go to the File menu.“ It’s right there at the top of the screen or window. They don’t see it. I watch their cursors floating around the UI buttons. „No, above that! The menubar!“ Floating right over the words. „Yes! Right there! See those words? Click on them!“

The entire computer UI metaphor is meaningless to them now.

They take screenshots of fucking everything and turn them in as homework (0 points, by the way). Some of them don’t know how to drag a file.

Wie gesagt, hier in dem Rant geht es um StudentInnen, also eigentlich das Cleverste, was ein Land zu bieten hat. Und das ist auch kein Dritte-Welt-Land, sondern Japan hier, was mit Südkorea zu den zwei fortschrittlichsten und intelligentesten Ländern des Planeten zählt. Hier wird auch an keiner Berufsschule unterrichtet, sondern an einer Universität, von der diese Beobachtung stammt.

Ich habe noch nie in meinem Leben von Sony etwas geschenkt gekriegt. Schon gar keine Hardware.

Dabei bin ich mehr als qualifiziert, natürellemont: meine erste PlayStation habe ich seit 1998…

Nun ja. Man soll niemals nie sagen, das hier gab es diese Woche umsonst:

Es ist ein offizieller Adapter für die PS5 für die Kamera des VR-Headsets! Mit PlayStation-Logo drauf! 😀

Das Witzige hier ist: inoffizielle Billigadapter Made In China kosten bei bekannten Internetauktionshäusern 17€! Und der Versand bei dem Teil oben dauerte nur wenige Tage! Fällt also auch weg.

Ich schätze nicht, dass Sony das wohl noch sehr lange durchziehen wird. Denn zum einen nehmen sie sich die Möglichkeit hier Umsatz zu machen. Zum anderen ebenso den Cashflow von etwaiger zukünftiger Hardware.

Am 5. Oktober erscheint Windows 11!

Das super-stabile, bug-freie und revolutionäre proprietäre Betriebssystem geht damit in eine weitere Verlängerung.

Warum eigentlich? Egal.

Doch wie wird Windows 11? Hammer oder Downer!? Nicht egal.

Weltexklusiv teile ich nun meine heutige Erklärung für einen Kollegen aus der IT, nachdem mir meine aus leeren Beck’s- und portugiesischen Weißweinflaschen bestehende Glaskugel rechts von meinem Rundeimer („rund“ heißt in Baden-Württemberg alles aus Plastik. Das wird hier von uns vorsortiert, landet aber eh alles auf der selben Müllkippe) folgende Eingebung gebracht hat (gestern Nacht, um 3:12, nach dem elften Versuch einzuschlafen):

Wir Menschen sind ja Experten der Mustererkennung, folglich ist das Muster hier völlig eindeutig: es wird ein Flop.

Naja, macht nichts. So isses halt. Das war mit Windows schon immer so. Deshalb kostet es auch nie was, wenn man sich neue Hardware kauft.

It’s a phenomenon of this century that humanity got a shitload of technology around them but don’t know how to make use of it.

Let’s take satellites, for example.

You can use them to watch stupid TV and make your mind go numb. Or you could use them to observe the weather and warn people of coming floods. Humanity this year chose the first and hundreds of people in Germany and Belgium are now dead, their houses and existences destroyed.

It’s ridiculous.

In Europe we got the EFAS which is the abbrevation for European Flood Awareness System. According to this satellite system, read up what they had to say around 9th and 10th of July:

„On 9 and 10 July, flood forecasts by the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service indicated a high probability of flooding for the Rhine River basin, affecting Switzerland and Germany.

Subsequent forecasts also indicated a high risk of flooding for the Meuse River basin, affecting Belgium. The magnitude of the floods forecasted for the Rhine River basin increased significantly in this period. The first EFAS warnings were sent to the relevant national authorities starting on 10 July and, with the continuously updated forecasts, more than 25 warnings were sent for specific regions of the Rhine and Meuse River basins in the following days until 14 July.“

This is a quote taken directly from their website, bold markings by me. Such occassions, satellites here and an appropriate agency as example, happen oftentimes which makes me wonder what is so advanced regarding our species. It’s beyond words. Humans are stupid fucks.

Single shares of the graphics card company Nvidia are at a whopping 657€ at the moment. Read here why it’s still a very good purchase currently if you’re planning on a long-term ROI (return on investment) regarding 10-15 years in the future.

1) AI development: Nvidia is one of the forerunners on the development of AI, Artificial Intelligence. Not only is this an industry sector which will be transformative unlike any other for the current century (and maybe more ahead), they offer concrete hardware for development already. If you’re interested in learning it for yourself, look out for „TensorFlow“ keywords or „Tensor core hardware“ here. Equipment is available for a few hundred bucks already
2) the ARM deal: although it can be taken as a hostile takeover, the purchase of British CPU company ARM, which is currently still under investigation, will be a pusher for the company like no other before. Maybe Nvidia may be late in the game but what they lack is the CPUGPU symbiosis competitor AMD can already offer since the ATI deal back in the 2000s
3) cryptocurrency mining: obscure as this may sound, Nvidia graphics cards are among the best for cryptocurrency mining, especially popular ones like Ether. Oh, and they are a good for gaming too!
4) as long as this pandemic may last, people will play video games. And those gamers need those graphics cards, the sooner and the more popular (thus more expensive), the better

Then there are the incredible company vitals, financial aspects are the most important if you plan to invest your hard earned money into a company.

Get that: fiscal first-quarter revenue soared 84% year over year to $5.66 billion. Gaming revenue doubled to $2.76 billion. Data center revenue 79% up to $2.05 billion. Earnings per share 106% year over year to $3.03. All of the mentioned figures which was even better as prognosed by the experts in this field (lower revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share of $5.41 billion and $3.28, respectively). [via]

What the company wants to do now, as is the trend in the high-tech industry sector since the pandemic began (e.g. Apple and Tesla did this too), is to split its stock and double it in sum (from 2 billion to 4 billion), which was announced in May and approved by the share holders some weeks later. Date will be the 20th of July by a ratio 1:4; which basically means, if you hold a share in Nvidia by 19th of July, you will own 4 the day afterwards.

Companies do this for a couple of reasons, some of the most popular ones are „we are overvalued, we now help ourselves“ or „we want to enable the small investors to get a piece of us by lowering the entrance bar“. Both of it is certainly true, we shouldn’t forget though publicly listed companies want to earn more money which will certainly also happen in the case of Nvidia, albeit not in the first months or first year after split. But possibly in years and years to come afterwards. Plus, the last split Nvidia did was in 2006; as you might see easily you can become a part of history here as this will certainly not be the case for years, maybe decades, to come.

Thus fear not to get active if you can spare a few hundreds of Euros but do it quick: latest tomorrow or maybe even by July 19th which is Monday, as this is the final date the stock split goes ex-dividend. The latter translated means: sources which state that you need to hold an Nvidia share by June 21 2021 already are simply false. That is the only quirk here which was announced at Nvidia’s annual meeting of stockholders on June 3. A bit confusing, but hey: it was never easy to earn money in the real world anyway, right?

I personally don’t remember a more ugly and brutal national football tournament than the current running „EURO 2020“.

It already starts with the name: they just stick with the naming convention from last year, as if the world wouldn’t have an ongoing pandemic emergency state, as if not millions of people are already dead because of it and still dying because of stupid superspreader events like EUROs, and as if time and mankind wouldn’t have progressed one year. Time doesn’t stand still. For no human, never, and certainly not for corrupted institutions like UEFA.

I remember the World Cup 2010 in South Africa to be a brutal football tournament. But it won’t compete for what I saw, live(!), on TV already during EURO 2020/2021, and we’re not yet even in the ongoing quarter finals.

The tournament started in the group phase with a heart dead Denmark player and live resuscitation on the football field. What’s more, UEFA as well as both participating football federations decide not to postpone the game, they just delay it. What the hell was going through their heads here? I couldn’t wonder more about this day (I play football since 3rd grade), in the end I was just happy that Christian Eriksen survived. I couldn’t care anymore about football for the coming week.

Then there are head injuries all the time, almost in any game played; players who hardly remember their names because of those. Bleeding noses; but those players still do penalties. Others running into enemy players with clinched fists towards their faces. Cramps all the time, even of the best; too high the burden for them even before this tournament. And yesterday I watched possibly the most fucked up intentional knee injury live on TV too. I don’t know what to make of it but it looks like football players are hating each other nowadays and try to hurt themselves more than ever; not by skill but by army-like bad behaviour. What kind of fucked up times are we living through here? This is not football, this is MMA. And I hate MMA.

Then there was also the most stupid discussion ever: about showing, or not showing, stadiums participating in „Pride Month“ with rainbow illuminated arenas. Serious? These buildings belong to cities. It’s up to the cities how to illuminate a stadium. If the cities don’t provide stadiums, where does UEFA want to show off the games!? They can’t, and shouldn’t, decide that. Football doesn’t care about your skin colour or which sexual preference you have. If you play bad, you are a bad player. And because it’s a team sport, in 99% of cases you loose your game. It’s just so simple, your looks and sexual orientation has nothing to do with the game. If you don’t like this, just never start playing football. Or doing any other kind of sports.

That it will be a very strange and eerie EURO came into my mind very very early, via a very subtle and very catchy kind of way: the merchandise. The jingles and music just don’t fit into the year 2021, like German TVs „Die guten Zeiten die sind jetzt…“ which means something like „The good times are now“ in English. O,RLY? Hell, yes: I couldn’t imagine a better time for me and myself than this year; not to mention the year before this one! My bad. Seriously, what the… Then there is „this band“ again, which, you know, created „the song“ for this EURO which certainly noone would find attractive under the age of 55. Hey, UEFA, there are people existing on this planet below 55 too who love football, you know!? But this you could have told Steve Jobs too and he wouldn’t listen, as he was also the biggest fan of this very „Irish rock band“. I also can’t read the adverts: I assume these are Chinese brands/products. How probable will it be that I or any other European football fan will buy something which she/he even can’t read? Then what is „Hisense“ exactly, the time keeper sponsor? You mean TikTok, a Chinese clone of a shut down US American bullshit app, Vine, represents football? UEFA, where do you get your information from nowadays? Chinese junk yards? I don’t get this anymore.

To understand something of the above, it’s necessary to dig deeper. As oftentimes is the case, it’s a good hint to throw in the question Cui bono? If the ordinary football fan won’t ever use TikTok, ever fly with Qatar Airways, and won’t be able to read Chinese advertising, who profits from this? Of course: somehow UEFA. And here it gets interesting, as this institution is rotten to the core. Let me now introduce some of the most important and most shady persons here. The research I didn’t do myself, it’s available in German via a photo journey here.

Michel Platini: the French Maradona, basically he’s a legend as a football player. He’s also the architect of a EURO with 24 teams. As this couldn’t be done by a single country alone, it is what is now: a European continent tournament, played from Portugal to Russia. Which couldn’t have been a more stupid idea during a virus pandemic. Unfortunately his player skills couldn’t help him as UEFA president: he’s no president anymore because, you know, corruption. Karma is a riot.

Gianni Infantino: FIFA president. To be fair, FIFA is even more corrupt, rotten and commercial than UEFA. Nothing can get better from here, so let’s just leave it. It’s basically „his banner“ which is shown in the stadiums besides UEFA’s. Remember the name, could be interesting with the next World Cup.

Rainer Koch: German bratwurst fan. He’s one of the responsibles for the fragmentation of UEFA (keyword „divide and conquer“). You know what he got for this? A brand new job in the executive committee…

Ilhan Aliyev: president of Azerbaijan. Please name one football player of Azerbaijan! Or a team from there! Yes. Now you know the problem. Baku is one of the stations during this EURO. Only Allah knows why. Oh, and he’s a wannabe dictator too! Kind man, isn’t he?

Nasser Al-Khelaifi: football fans may know this name, not only because he is the owner of Paris Saint-Germain. But also because he’s important for UEFA as well as FIFA. It’s possible Qatar Airways is one of the main sponsors of this EURO by pure coincidence. A better idea would be a FIFA World Cup in Qatar, don’t you think? Playing football on green grass is overrated, let’s try desert instead.

Zbigniew Boniek: he was a very good footballer, now he’s also an UEFA executive. He tolerates Nazi banners by Polish fans; yes, you read that right. Men like him had so much power, they could forbid whole cities during EURO 2020/2021 to light their stadiums in alternative colours.

Davor Suker: a Croatian football legend. He’s, like so many others from the above list, a perfect symbol of the proverb „power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely“. He dislikes critical journalists, was condemed for fraud, prays for Ustaša leaders (kind of Nazis in Croatia, get that) in his free time – perfect fit for the UEFA executive committee!

What easily can be seen in the end: brutality. Ignorance. Fraud. Corruption. Decisions no one, and especially no real football fan, understands, are not only visible during each game, they also don’t come out of nowhere. There are reasons for this, and these are no abstract ones or unknown to the public, these are always connected to people, to simple human beings. As long as football fans don’t care, these won’t change. Not in UEFA, not FIFA, not in your local football league or your ordinary town football club. Be aware if you tolerate this any longer, you risk an entire and very valuable (at least IMHO) kind of sport. Forever. The next big tournament will be more corrupted, more brutal, more stupid. And we don’t even know about the consequences of so much people in one place during a hazardous virus pandemic.

2020/2021 made me thinking. In so many kinds of ways. If I will ever stop playing or watching football in my life, I will remember the years for sure.

1a) mit dem „Hort der Freiheit“ („freedom’s holdout“) kann es nicht weit her sein, wenn sich plötzlich, ohne dass wir IRC-Nutzer hier etwas beitragen können, die Architektur des Knotens ändert
1b) von „Freiheit“ kann auch keine Rede sein, wenn 20 von 30 freiwilligen Mitarbeitern einfach kündigen. Doch die hatten sich das nun auch fast vier Jahre lange genug mit angeschaut
2) „a new world“: nee nee, danke, echt, bitte nicht! Welche „neue Welt“ denn bitte, oje… Orwells Euphemismen ahoi, hier ist so viel falsch mit dem Statement, oh my…
3) „millions of others“: glaubt mir, ich wäre der letzte Mensch, der IRC nicht „Millionen Nutzer“ wünschen würde, aber das entspricht einfach nicht der Realität. Wir reden hier zwar von 24.000 Channels alleine auf freenode (also dem alten, vor der erzwungenen Umstellung, Stand 17.06.21), aber insgesamt, naja, schaut selbst mit Stand von Mitte Mai 2021:

Und die F/OSS-Community war angepisst, zum Beispiel Wikimedia. Oder die Free Software Foundation Europe. Oder Ubuntu. Oder CentOS, FreeBSD, Gentoo Linux, Arch Linux, etc.

Was macht die F/OSS-Community in solchen Fällen? Klar, es ist alles F/OSS, es wird geforkt, also gibt es etwas Neues, es gibt nun Libera.

Die Arbeit endet hier jedoch nicht, denn leider könnt ihr registrierte Nicks und Aliase nicht einfach auf neue Server mitnehmen. Wenn ihr also einen registrierten Nick auf freenode hattet, müsst ihr diesen erneut bei Libera registrieren.

Das ist zwar kein Hexenwerk. Doch bei mir war das schon so lange her, ich musste das erst mal nachlesen. Ich erspare das anderen, hier was ihr machen müsst:

1. verbindet euch über den IRC-Client eurer Wahl mit den Zugangsdaten oben bei Libera
2. am besten geht ihr gleich in einen Kanal, z.B. #debian
3. tippt euren Wunsch-Alias/-Nickname ein, z.B. so: /nick MeinNick
4. registriert euren Nick: /msg NickServ REGISTER EuerPasswort eureEmail@provider.com
5. ihr bekommt eine (automatische) Email vom Libera-Support. Hier ist ein erneuter Befehl gelistet, den ihr wieder in den „Senden“-Bereich einfügen müsst, etwa so: /msg NickServ VERIFY REGISTER MeinNick Hab2tp3FNtrsGbGO
6. vergesst nicht, diese Nickdaten, also Nickname und euer selbstgewähltes Passwort, bei der Konfiguration des Server in eurem Client zu hinterlegen (mit SASL für euer Passwort). Sonst bekommt ihr bei jeder IRC-Kanalverbindung eine Meldung, dass der Nick bereits vergeben ist. Das kann sehr nervig werden, z.B. wenn ihr mit dem Smartphone oft an Arbeitsplätzen oder zuhause zwischen WLANs und mobilen Internetverbindungen hin- und herwechselt

Nun, das war’s. Zum Glück.

Vielleicht wollt ihr euren freenode-Nick einfach so lassen und umziehen, damit ihr auf dem neuen Server in euren Lieblingskanälen erkannt werdet. Und noch was: es kann sein, dass euer Lieblingskanal noch gar nicht umgezogen ist. In dem Fall lohnt es sich noch ein paar Wochen zusätzlich im freenode herumzulurken, ihr bekommt das ja mit, wenn die Admins hier die neuen Kanäle diskutieren. War zumindest öfter bei mir so. Wenn das alle gemacht haben, so in ein paar Wochen bis Monaten, könnt ihr ja die freenode-Konfig final aus euren Clients herauslöschen. 🙂

Im Webland passiert aktuell sehr viel, man könnte meinen, die Pandemie sei bereits vorbei. Das ist echt gut, denn dadurch fällt es seit wenigen Wochen wieder etwas leichter v.a. technische Themen zu finden und diese auch hier voranzubringen!

Eines davon sei heute vorgestellt: Projekt Morpheus.

Von den Ingenieuren, die einst die Architektur des Internets entwickelten, der DARPA, kommt ein vielversprechender neuer Prozessor, der garstigen Angriffsvektoren wie Meltdown und Spectre den Garaus machen soll.

Das schafft dieser dadurch, indem er einfach dauernd und zufällig die CPU-Architektur ändert.

Das macht er nicht in Minuten. Auch nicht in Sekunden. Sondern in Millisekunden.

Erst letzten Sommer sollen 525 IT-Sicherheitsexperten über drei Monate hinweg versucht haben diese CPU zu hacken – wohl vergeblich. Daraufhin gab es von der DARPA selbst auch erst im Januar offizielle Ergebnisse in einem Paper.

Es gibt dazu oftmals kritische Stimmen in meinem Hinterkopf, wenn die DARPA etwas macht, so auch hier: „wenn sich dauernd, innerhalb von Millisekunden meine CPU-Architektur ändert, wie soll ich bitte dafür etwas programmieren, geschweige denn dauerhaft laufen lassen!?“ Doch auch hier scheint es bereits eine Antwort zu geben:

„…this happens at the microarchitecture level, software running on the processor is unaffected“

Glaube ich dennoch erst, wenn ich es sehe.

Und auch diese neuartige „Gestaltwandler-CPU“ kostet hardwareseitig was, nämlich 10% Einbußen der Prozessorperformance. Das kann uns heute bei n Kernen pro CPU allerdings IMHO herzlich egal sein.
