tl;dr: Nope.

The turing test is the final frontier in distinguishing the stupid machines from the clever androids.

Basically spoken, if you mock a machine about its hair (if it got some) and the machine seems upset to you, in a state you as a human can’t distunguish the reaction from a human one, the turing test has been passed during your daily routine here – a simple conversation. Machines don’t have feelings. At least they shouldn’t have at the moment, dated 2022.

Den deutlichsten Vorstoß des Jahres dafür liefert ausgerechnet eines der ekligsten Unternehmen des Planeten selbst: Facebook.

Die Gesichtsbüchler kommen mit der EU nicht klar, das zweite Mal nach dem irländischen Steuerparadiesproblem, jetzt eben die DSGVO. Und weil sie wegen den erhöhten Datenschutzmaßnahmen seit 2018 keine EU-Daten auf US-Servern mehr speichern dürfen, dadurch keine ausbeuterische Werbung mehr schalten können, ziehen sie nun einen Rückzug der eigenen Produkte, also Facebook, Instagram und WhatsApp, etc. in Betracht.

Ganz ehrlich, was gibt es Schöneres!

Wir könnten endlich eigene Produkte nutzen, könnten die Pod-Idee des Weberfinders Tim-Berners Lee endlich umsetzen! Europäische Unternehmen wären gezwungen auf EU-Alternativen zu setzen, etwa Threema statt WhatsApp! Der Niedergang aller algorithmischen (Hass-)Bubbles wäre eingeläutet! Wir würden verschont bleiben von der Idee eines „Second Life 2.0“ (aka „Metaversum“)! Wer würde das nicht alles feiern!

Allein, dieser bescheuerte Konjunktiv. Sie werden es sehr wahrscheinlich nicht machen. Zum anderen bräuchten sie nur Server in Irland hochziehen, um das „Problem“ zu beheben.

Am Ende wird es hier wahrscheinlich wie mit jeder Weltverbesserungsidee passieren: Umsetzung ausgesetzt. Aber schön, dass wir das mal gedanklich durchspielen durften. Ist ja auch schon was wert in diesen Zeiten.

Mit einer der kontroversesten (sprich: dümmsten) Technologieentscheidungen des letzten Jahres hat die Videoplattform YouTube, ein eingekauftes Webprojekt der Google-Mutter Alphabet, 2021 den Dislike-Button deaktiviert. Demokratie: sie wird einfach überschätzt!11

Soll niemand sagen, wir müssten uns dort den ganzen Tag nur Scheiße ansehen. Gibt ohnehin zu viele Werbeblöcke. Nicht auch noch das.

Einen Haken hat die Sache, ist aber meta: das Plugin findet ohne Probleme durch Archivabfragen die Dislikes bis zur Deaktivierung des Features durch die Firma Alphabet. Für neue Videos aber werden nur die Dislikes ab Installation des Plugins geprüft. Das sollte aber nichts ausmachen, zumindest bei dem größten Prozentsatz der Milliarden Videos dort.

2 Jahre am Stück Pandemie! Was habe ich gadgettechnisch mitgenommen? Ein Zwischenfazit:

Es ist einfach un-glaub-lich, was eBay mittlerweile für Verkaufsgebühren verlangt!

Meine letzten Verkäufe:

August, 75€+15€ Versand ins EU-Ausland, macht 90€. Mir wurden überwiesen: 79€. 11€ weg!
September, 79€+5€ Versand, macht 84€. Bei mir angekommen: 73€. 11€ weg!
November, 199€+0€ Versand, macht 199€. Bei mir angekommen: 177€. 22€ weg!

Doppelt hart: bei allen drei rechne ich ja teilweise den Versand schon mit ein, das lege ich zusätzlich noch drauf. Also überall statt 11€, mindestens 15,50€, wenn über Hermes versendet wird. Bei dem letzten Verkauf sogar 26,50€! WTF!

Mein Fehler war sehr wahrscheinlich das auf die „eBay Zahlungsabwichlung“ umstellen zu lassen im Mai diesen Jahres. Seither sind meine Verkäufe Verlustgeschäfte. Ich kann mich erinnern, habe ich Verkäufe über die Onlineplattform davor gemacht, es kostete mich insgesamt vielleicht 3-4€. Dabei war völlig egal, wie hoch meine Verkaufspreise waren. Die Käufer konnten damals selbst entscheiden, wie sie mir das Geld überweisen wollen – das geht jetzt alles nicht mehr, will alles eBay machen. Die Auswirkungen sind für mich als Privathändler zu krass. WTF!

Gut, wieder was für’s Leben gelernt! Aktienunternehmen wollen für uns alle nur das Beste!11

Bei mir sind dieser Tage noch zwei Einladungen anhängig, wo man sich als angehende/r Entwickler oder Entwicklerin mit Profis vernetzen, und auch die entsprechenden Unternehmen kennenlernen kann.

Ladies first: die WomenHack findet am 26.10. virtuell statt. Hauptfokus liegt auf von Frauen organisierte Events aus über 40 Ländern und über 130 Städten. Es geht um: full-stack, front-end, back-end, mobile, cybersecurity, data, DevOps, Cloud, UX/UI, Product Owners – oder eben die es schnell noch werden wollen und diese IT-Themen interessant finden. Der zweite Event in Stuttgart ist die HackerX, das Konzept ist ungefähr das selbe. Auch hier rein virtuell, ebenfalls am 26.10. Man (oder Frau) hat auch hier die Möglichkeit Unternehmen auf der Suche aus der IT-Branche kennenzulernen. Mit den BewerberInnen, die hier getroffen werden, geht das natürlich genauso. Ich war einmal dort, war ganz nice, Schwerpunkt liegt auf Programmierung. Das Jahr 2007 war für unsere Gadgets eine Zeitenwende. Mit dem Erscheinen des allerersten „Smartphones“, dem iPhone von Apple, wurden elektronische Helferlein plötzlich in zwei unterschiedliche Zweige getrennt. Wahrscheinlich für immer.

Hier das iPhone, ein reines Gerät des Konsums. Keinerlei Eingabe- oder Ausgabeoptionen mehr außer einem Bildschirm, „alles ist Touch“.

Dort Geräte wie der Computer, Eingabe und Ausgabe strikt getrennt, die nach wie vor bestehenden „Creator Devices“. Wir Menschen klappern Zeug in diese Maschine, wahlweise mit Tastatur oder Maus, sehr selten sogar gleichzeitig, die Ausgabe erfolgt strikt auf einem externen Gerät namens Monitor. Keine Smartphone-App wird ohne PC erstellt.

Seitdem ist viel passiert. Leider auch viel zu viel Scheiße.

Die elektronische Welt, wie wir sie heute vorfinden, ist eine Welt der UIs, der User Interfaces, zu deutsch stocksteif genannt Benutzerschnittstellen. Die meisten Benutzerschnittstellen sind knallbunt, man könnte es so zusammenfassen: „alles was man klicken, draggen, und droppen kann.“

Auch hier gab es von Anfang an zwei Paradigmen: hier die US-Firma Apple, die lieber zu wenig als zu viel in ihre UIs einbaut, weil sie keine NutzerInnen überfordern möchte. Dort die US-Firma Google mit Benutzerschnittstellen für jeden Furz, bis zum Verändern einer simplen Systemkachel, für Techies, Überforderung völlig egal. Nichts dazwischen, eigentlich von Anfang an. Der Touchscreen schreibt die Regeln jetzt vor.

Was dann am Ende, natürlich, zu noch mehr NutzerInnenverblödung führte, wie hier von dem Reddit-Nutzer ClockworkAeroplane vor kurzem beschrieben:

„I teach mostly college freshmen. They don’t know what a URL even is. Literally. I tell them the easily-remembered URL for the Moodle server, and they literally don’t know what to do with it. They have never typed a URL into an address bar in their lives. Why? You don’t do that on an iPhone.

They know how to search for things. They know how to tap/click a link. They do not know what a URL is.

I found out that a lot of them were logging into the school’s bulletin board system, finding my welcome message from the beginning of the year, and then tapping/clicking the Moodle URL and the Zoom URL there. The problem with the latter is that the Zoom URL there was the registration one, which many of them couldn’t figure out, so they asked their friends for „the“ Zoom meeting URL, and one guy posted „it“ to their social media group, and tons of people entered with that.

Yeah, that was his Zoom URL. Not the Zoom URL. I had like 10 people coming in as the same person, making the usage record completely unusable.

Just…

Kids who grew up on smartphones literally do not know how to do anything on a computer. Literally. I had to make a screencast showing them how to type in a URL, how to figure out what application a PDF is opening in, where downloads go when you download things… Just really basic computer stuff that they simply don’t know.

They don’t know what a menu is. I say, „Go to the File menu.“ It’s right there at the top of the screen or window. They don’t see it. I watch their cursors floating around the UI buttons. „No, above that! The menubar!“ Floating right over the words. „Yes! Right there! See those words? Click on them!“

The entire computer UI metaphor is meaningless to them now.

They take screenshots of fucking everything and turn them in as homework (0 points, by the way). Some of them don’t know how to drag a file.

I teach at one of the tippiest-toppiest universities in Japan. But my students are total morons when it comes to computer usage. This is our life now.“ [via]

Wie gesagt, hier in dem Rant geht es um StudentInnen, also eigentlich das Cleverste, was ein Land zu bieten hat. Und das ist auch kein Dritte-Welt-Land, sondern Japan hier, was mit Südkorea zu den zwei fortschrittlichsten und intelligentesten Ländern des Planeten zählt. Hier wird auch an keiner Berufsschule unterrichtet, sondern an einer Universität, von der diese Beobachtung stammt.

Ich habe noch nie in meinem Leben von Sony etwas geschenkt gekriegt. Schon gar keine Hardware.

Dabei bin ich mehr als qualifiziert, natürellemont: meine erste PlayStation habe ich seit 1998…

Nun ja. Man soll niemals nie sagen, das hier gab es diese Woche umsonst:

Es ist ein offizieller Adapter für die PS5 für die Kamera des VR-Headsets! Mit PlayStation-Logo drauf! 😀

Das Witzige hier ist: inoffizielle Billigadapter Made In China kosten bei bekannten Internetauktionshäusern 17€! Und der Versand bei dem Teil oben dauerte nur wenige Tage! Fällt also auch weg.

Ich schätze nicht, dass Sony das wohl noch sehr lange durchziehen wird. Denn zum einen nehmen sie sich die Möglichkeit hier Umsatz zu machen. Zum anderen ebenso den Cashflow von etwaiger zukünftiger Hardware.

Am 5. Oktober erscheint Windows 11!

Das super-stabile, bug-freie und revolutionäre proprietäre Betriebssystem geht damit in eine weitere Verlängerung.

Warum eigentlich? Egal.

Doch wie wird Windows 11? Hammer oder Downer!? Nicht egal.

Weltexklusiv teile ich nun meine heutige Erklärung für einen Kollegen aus der IT, nachdem mir meine aus leeren Beck’s- und portugiesischen Weißweinflaschen bestehende Glaskugel rechts von meinem Rundeimer („rund“ heißt in Baden-Württemberg alles aus Plastik. Das wird hier von uns vorsortiert, landet aber eh alles auf der selben Müllkippe) folgende Eingebung gebracht hat (gestern Nacht, um 3:12, nach dem elften Versuch einzuschlafen):

Wir Menschen sind ja Experten der Mustererkennung, folglich ist das Muster hier völlig eindeutig: es wird ein Flop.

Naja, macht nichts. So isses halt. Das war mit Windows schon immer so. Deshalb kostet es auch nie was, wenn man sich neue Hardware kauft.

It’s a phenomenon of this century that humanity got a shitload of technology around them but don’t know how to make use of it.

Let’s take satellites, for example.

You can use them to watch stupid TV and make your mind go numb. Or you could use them to observe the weather and warn people of coming floods. Humanity this year chose the first and hundreds of people in Germany and Belgium are now dead, their houses and existences destroyed.

It’s ridiculous.

In Europe we got the EFAS which is the abbrevation for European Flood Awareness System. According to this satellite system, read up what they had to say around 9th and 10th of July:

„On 9 and 10 July, flood forecasts by the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service indicated a high probability of flooding for the Rhine River basin, affecting Switzerland and Germany.

Subsequent forecasts also indicated a high risk of flooding for the Meuse River basin, affecting Belgium. The magnitude of the floods forecasted for the Rhine River basin increased significantly in this period. The first EFAS warnings were sent to the relevant national authorities starting on 10 July and, with the continuously updated forecasts, more than 25 warnings were sent for specific regions of the Rhine and Meuse River basins in the following days until 14 July.“

This is a quote taken directly from their website, bold markings by me. Such occassions, satellites here and an appropriate agency as example, happen oftentimes which makes me wonder what is so advanced regarding our species. It’s beyond words. Humans are stupid fucks.

Single shares of the graphics card company Nvidia are at a whopping 657€ at the moment. Read here why it’s still a very good purchase currently if you’re planning on a long-term ROI (return on investment) regarding 10-15 years in the future.

1) AI development: Nvidia is one of the forerunners on the development of AI, Artificial Intelligence. Not only is this an industry sector which will be transformative unlike any other for the current century (and maybe more ahead), they offer concrete hardware for development already. If you’re interested in learning it for yourself, look out for „TensorFlow“ keywords or „Tensor core hardware“ here. Equipment is available for a few hundred bucks already
2) the ARM deal: although it can be taken as a hostile takeover, the purchase of British CPU company ARM, which is currently still under investigation, will be a pusher for the company like no other before. Maybe Nvidia may be late in the game but what they lack is the CPUGPU symbiosis competitor AMD can already offer since the ATI deal back in the 2000s
3) cryptocurrency mining: obscure as this may sound, Nvidia graphics cards are among the best for cryptocurrency mining, especially popular ones like Ether. Oh, and they are a good for gaming too!
4) as long as this pandemic may last, people will play video games. And those gamers need those graphics cards, the sooner and the more popular (thus more expensive), the better

Then there are the incredible company vitals, financial aspects are the most important if you plan to invest your hard earned money into a company.

Get that: fiscal first-quarter revenue soared 84% year over year to $5.66 billion. Gaming revenue doubled to $2.76 billion. Data center revenue 79% up to $2.05 billion. Earnings per share 106% year over year to $3.03. All of the mentioned figures which was even better as prognosed by the experts in this field (lower revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share of $5.41 billion and $3.28, respectively). [via]

What the company wants to do now, as is the trend in the high-tech industry sector since the pandemic began (e.g. Apple and Tesla did this too), is to split its stock and double it in sum (from 2 billion to 4 billion), which was announced in May and approved by the share holders some weeks later. Date will be the 20th of July by a ratio 1:4; which basically means, if you hold a share in Nvidia by 19th of July, you will own 4 the day afterwards.

Companies do this for a couple of reasons, some of the most popular ones are „we are overvalued, we now help ourselves“ or „we want to enable the small investors to get a piece of us by lowering the entrance bar“. Both of it is certainly true, we shouldn’t forget though publicly listed companies want to earn more money which will certainly also happen in the case of Nvidia, albeit not in the first months or first year after split. But possibly in years and years to come afterwards. Plus, the last split Nvidia did was in 2006; as you might see easily you can become a part of history here as this will certainly not be the case for years, maybe decades, to come.

Thus fear not to get active if you can spare a few hundreds of Euros but do it quick: latest tomorrow or maybe even by July 19th which is Monday, as this is the final date the stock split goes ex-dividend. The latter translated means: sources which state that you need to hold an Nvidia share by June 21 2021 already are simply false. That is the only quirk here which was announced at Nvidia’s annual meeting of stockholders on June 3. A bit confusing, but hey: it was never easy to earn money in the real world anyway, right?
