Zum Ende des Jahres noch eine traurige Meldung aus dem Bereich Technologie: für uns wird es leider nicht möglich sein, den Warp-Antrieb zu erfinden.

Oben: Warpantrieb nach Alcubierre

Wir erinnern uns: DER Weltraumantrieb der Wahl in der Space Opera „Star Trek“ – geht aber noch weiter zurück auf den Roman „Islands of Space“ von John W. Campbell aus dem Jahr 1957.

Nur warum?

Ist bisschen doof jetzt: für Antimaterie gilt Gravitation ebenso, fanden die Forscher vom CERN heraus.

Während die Meldung vom CERN dieses Jahr durchaus in den Medien war, war es der Zusammenhang mit der Warp-Technologie eher weniger. Wir bräuchten Antimaterie für den Warp, die „nach oben fällt“, statt nach unten. Tja, das Leben ist nicht fair, Schwerkraft kann ein ziemliches A****loch sein, wie hier.

Welche Optionen für interstellare Raumfahrt mit „Überlichtgeschwindigkeit“ bleiben uns dann noch? Ich weiß es nicht. Aber Warp wird es nicht.

Outside of the nightclub I don’t know what to do – inside of the night club it’s too dark to care

The Streets höre ich bereits seit 2002. Für mich hat es Let’s push things forward schon alleine gebracht, ich kaufte mir die Platte auf CD und das war für mich Album des Jahres. Die Mischung aus Rap, Garage, Electronica und dieser krasse LDN-Slang mit dem übergenialen Storytelling (die Hoooks von den diversen weiteren Indie-KünstlerInnen als schöner Bonus) – joa, das war Rap für mich! Kann gerne so weitergehen!

Ja das ging dann bis 2011 und dann war Schluss, mit Computers and Blues. Geht, wir werden alle alt, was sollte man auch noch erzählen.

Ich war umso erfreuter (und erstaunter), dass ich seit Ewigkeiten dann mit einem alten Newsletter wieder auf den neuesten Stand gebracht wurde: der Skinner-Typ hat ein neues Album gemacht! Rotzfrech, mit Ü40! Aber immer noch am bangen, wie auf Troubled waters eindeutig unter Beweis gestellt.

Zu meiner Verteidigung muss ich allerdings sagen, dass er schon immer Tracks auf Alben gepackt hat, mit denen ich nicht sofort mitgerockt und mitgerappt habe. Ist wahrscheinlich auch normal. Und die nicht erwähnten sind ja jetzt nicht schlecht oder qualitativ minderwertiger oder so. Aber die oben – woohoo!

The oldest active Torrent file out there is „Fanimatrix“ and it’s turning incredible 20 years old these days. Congratulations!

The fanfilm was created by friends from New Zealand with a budget of only 800$ – half of which was spent on a single leather jacket. Back then there was no YouTube and people connecting to the Internet mostly through dial-up connections. So distributing the work through the Torrent technology to a potential worldwide audience, new back then, must have been a no-brainer.

The movie even has it’s own IMDB entry. It’s fair to say with 6.9 it does well for only 13 minutes.

What happened to those friends? It had a happy end: they have own careers as actors. And doing a celebration party won’t be easy as they are scattered around the world. But director Rajneel Singh mentioned maybe it happens for the 25th anniversary instead.

Alles Gute dem Tape!

Die ersten Tapes meines Lebens: Mask. Basil, der Mäusedetektiv. Flitze Feuerzahn.

Bis heute hat ein Original-Tape überlebt: Akhenaton – Sol Invictus.

Dazu unzählige Bootlegs, insgesamt 24 besitze ich noch.

Und eine originale, leere Sony HF-90, die nicht mehr zum Einsatz kam.

Mein erster Sony-Walkman: 1997.

Mein erstes Auto 2000 hatte ein Tapedeck.

Die zwei einzigen Stereoanlagen, die ich besaß, ebenfalls.

Ich werde es vermissen, egal ob die Qualität grottig war: zu unserer Subkultur damals gehörte das Tape wie der Käse zu Käsespätzle. Ein bisschen Angst macht mir nur, wie es sich aus meinem Leben ausgephased hat: leise. Unbemerkt. In irgendeinem Jahr zwischen 2000 und 2009 wegen MP3.

Fick‘ den deutschen Staat!

Mit dem „Tabaksteuermodernisierungsgesetz“ sind aktuell Liquids teurer als eine reguläre Schachtel der Premiummarke (Beispiel egal) Gauloises: 8€ für die Schachtel am Automaten, 8,13€ oder 8,90€ für das Liquid, je nachdem wo du kaufst. Eventuell mehr.

Wir werden bestraft, obwohl wir vom ekligen, süchtigmachenden und krebserregenden Tabak in Eigenregie wegkommen wollen und das ist der Dank dafür! Die Alternative ist seit Monaten teurer, als der echte Tod vom Automaten.

Der Clou kommt aber noch: wenn euer lokaler Liquid-Shop die selben Liquids mit den neuen, supertollen Banderolen zu dem neuen teuren Preis verkauft, steht darauf stolz neben dem plattgedrückten Bundesadler „Tabakwarensubstitut“. Hahaha!

Hey, ihr schweißigen Hemden von den Bundesämtern:

Das hier sind Liquids.

Die Liquids haben mit Tabak so viel zu tun wie deine Mutter mit Durex, nämlich gar nichts! Neben einem Haufen chemischem Schwachsinn ist die einzige Komponente, die sie sich mit Tabak teilen, das Gift, das Nikotin, und selbst das ist optional. Ihr habt kein Plan, keinen Bock und ihr macht Umsteigern wie mir unnötig das Leben schwer, von dem Gift wegzukommen. Eine meiner Hauptargumentationen, „Liquids sind eh billiger“, auch gegenüber Umsteigern, ist damit hinfällig. Danke, Deutschland!

Das sind zwei wichtige Euro, die für einen Ex-Raucher, der gerade erst mit Liquids anfängt, ein kritischer Punkt sein können: 1,60€ plus Mehrwertsteuer, Tendenz steigend. Wie bei echten Zigaretten eben auch (ich kenne noch 5-Mark-Zigaretten).

Nee mir ist schon klar, dass der deutsche Staat mit dem Krebstod der Menschen Geld verdienen will: wo kämen wir sonst hin, ist kein Utopia hier. Ihr Spasten. Allerdings hätte ich mir ein bisschen mehr Transparenz gewünscht. Und auch das Wissen ist hier völlig verkackt: ihr habt keine Ahnung. So wie Scholz von Cum-Ex. Also ändert den Begriff wenigstens. Kommt schon, mir zu liebe! Ich habe 22 Jahre geraucht und selbst mit eisernem Willen und findiger Shop-Aufspürungstechnik (gibt’s eben nicht an jeder Ecke so wie eure tollen Zigarettenautomaten) es bisher nicht geschafft davon zu wegzukommen. Ist wohl mein Endgame. So wie Corona für die Welt.

Algorithms are „cool“ and run anything these days: from your smartwatch to the chatbot you are asking about stock trading options online.

From time to time we find useful algorithms for usage in a specific field; if you do what I do here, measurements about your key performance indicators (KPIs) is all around your texts. So of course this cool text iq calculator (or estimator, as it’s officially called) was of utmost interest to me:

Basically what it does: you input your (preferably English written) text with at least 50 words into the text field and hit the button „Estimate IQ of text author“. The result should be pretty self-explanatory.

For the light-package travelers, here is what to make up of the results by the author of the webapp:

„As accurate as one would expect such an algorithm to be. As „proof“ I have run the algorithm on a few examples, and you can see that the results aren’t surprising (nor should they be).
* Stephen Hawking, using his last paper as the sample, achieves an IQ of 151.

Final verdict: if you want to have a quick check if what you are reading in English is not done by a full retard, https://writingtoiq.com/ could be very useful. I didn’t find a source code reference and could do a quick check of the algorithm but the app does what it promises. I can recommend it.

Sieht so bestimmt nicht aus: was meine Grafikkarte aktuell dank Stable Diffusion „denkt“, wie der neue PS5-Handheld aussehen könnte…

Dem Erfolg des Steamdeck (und den vielen mittlerweile erhältlichen Handheld-Klonen) ist es wohl zu verdanken, dass Sony offiziell über einen Nachfolger einer tragbaren PlayStation nachdenkt:

„A new report details the PlayStation Q Lite handheld device, which is still in its QA testing phase. The new handheld device is described as a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen in the middle, but the catch is that it will only work with Sony’s PlayStation Remote Play.“ [via]

1080p und 60FPS bei „Projekt Q“ in allen Ehren, aber wer wird einen Handheld zocken wollen, der keine eigenen Spiele abspielen kann und nur mit Internetanbindung funktioniert? Ich nicht.

So wie sich das anhört wird das lediglich ein fancy neues Controllergadget sein. Irgendwie auch hardcore kopiert von Nintendo bei der Wii U – mittlerweile auch schon antik und aus 2012.

Sei’s drum, Ende 2024 wissen wir alle mehr. Bis dahin wollen die Japaner die Hardware veröffentlicht wissen. Dann brauchen wir uns auch nichts mehr zusammenfantasieren (lassen) wie oben.

I was lucky to see Banksy in beautiful Lisbon. It’s the irony of life that although he had some public screenings already in my German home region, I needed a trip to a foreign country to be able to see his work personally.

So without further ado, here what could be seen for 12€ in Capsule Gallery Rua Viriato, 25-B1050-234 Lisboa:

The exhibition was on two floors, I arranged the uploads here like you would encounter them when you start it yourself. So the targeted peace pigeon is really what you could see at the end. Shortly before you could leave to the left or shop the merchandise to your right. The exhibition there will last until the end of December.

Although I feel a certain outdated spirit when regarding his stuff today, I still think a lot of messages still hold a high relevancy. Like when you think „you were told about before, so don’t say you didn’t know“. This is important. And invaluable. But will vanish, probably without any trace, over time.

Es ist 2023, ein neues Jahr, Zeit also, dass wir alle erstmal ein anständiges Bad nehmen und den ganzen alten Dreck abwaschen!

Der aktuelle wissenschaftliche Status zur Kernfusion ist folgender: sie funktioniert. Allerdings ist die Technologie nicht alltagstauglich. Daran ändert auch der aktuelle Durchbruch in den USA nichts, durch ein Kernfusionsexperiment habe man einen Nettogewinn erzielt. Also man hat mehr Energie erzeugt, als man reingesteckt hat in das Experiment.

Warum? Steht hier.

Über Laser (viele davon) hat man mit 2,05 Millijoule am Ende 3,15 Millijoule herausgeholt. Also rein rechnerisch weit über 50%. Die 1,1 MJ sind allerdings nur 0,3kWh. Mir Menschen brauchen alleine um einen Kessel Wasser zu kochen, damit wir uns einen Tee machen können, 0,2kWh. Diese Tasse hier sollte man lange genießen!

Nee, is‘ cool, aber reicht halt auch nicht für mehr. Wir sind Dekaden von einer wirklichen Alternative der Energiegewinnung durch Kernfusion entfernt. Zudem hat die Menschheit jetzt auch nicht gerade die positivsten Erfahrungen mit Atomkernen in der Vergangenheit gemacht. Mir persönlich wäre das zu heikel, das weiterzuverfolgen.

Es kommt selten vor, dass Elon Musk öffentlich technische Inkompetenz beweist. Sein Twitterkauf war leider mal wieder so ein Fall. Seine Ausfälle hier werden dümmer und kostspieliger. Ich hoffe er leidet nicht an Demenz oder sowas.

:: Introduction

I think of Neuromancer as a pretty complicated novel. Written in 1984 by William Gibson it is one of the earliest pieces of literature of cyberpunk genre, part of its Kanon today, so to speak. Anyone interested in cyberpunk will encounter it sooner or later. And anyone could read something different in it. Part of it, it’s written from the future and not only covers artificial intelligence, hacking, virtual worlds/cyberspace, drugs, ROMs; you could go on and still not grasp the vastness here. After reading, I was not really sure if even Gibson understood what he published here. But we are cool with it, as this is another factor for one’s sympathy for this 271-pager.

Today, there are websites which aggregate the most popular quotes like the one from Goodreads here. I’m pretty sure with some of the text snippets alone, you will have problems not only from semantics perspective but also from the vocabulary alone. This is innovative and futuristic but hinders a reader from truly enjoying it. Nevertheless, the cryptic groundwork was taken often as the basis for some nice artwork pieces, like the 48-page graphic novel released in 1989 by Tom de Haven and Bruce Jensen. Heck, I even think, as I own the graphic novel too and read the novel first, that you might be better off with the graphic novel and leaving the book all alone. Although I won’t recommend it, as you know, we are all cyberpunks ourselves here.

:: My proof of concept

No matter how complicated and exotic the text, I thought this would be a perfect basis for some of my further experiments with machine learning artwork generation. I thought maybe it’s better just to leave my hardware alone: should my GPU make sense of these lines now! We are 2022, with engines like Stable Diffusion and a recent laptop, this sounds like a piece of cake! So I took the most popular quotes from the novel, the ones which made sense in creating something which a reader’s mind could have difficulties with, and let it run through my (laptop) GPU. I picked the best one from three which were created simultanously per quote in approx. three minutes. Without further ado, let’s check the results here! I was happy that my POC was a success, of course. And I was also pretty convinced by what my graphics processor could make of those rather difficult novel lines from the 80s in our current times. However, I also see some difficulties when StableDiffusion tries to render certain things: like human appearance, as oftentimes it outputs strange limbs and also faces, especially around eyes. Same goes for text, as seen in some of those (rather grotesque) examples. Both problems could be shared with other tools like DALL-E 2 or Imagen though, I never tried those before. It’s a very young brand new technology of course, this is common. From artwork perspective, I also am not sure if this is really a problem. Furthermore, I think this is a perfect example for what we do from read-write culture. Which can’t be emphasised enough nowadays, because what we originally intended back then, generate reciprocal relationship between the producer and the consumer, wasn’t taken up by people as we intended. Like ever. Stupid, unreasonable consumerism won, unfortunately. As such, this might be not the last project of its kind I did by myself, as I got enough books in my private library which could need clarification visually.
